Een frusterende afgelopen 36 uur
De afgelopen 36 uur waren hard werken en mentaal lastig. Ook al wisten we dat deze periode eraan kwam, moesten we toch even schakelen.
Met deze periode bedoelen we de huidige windhoek een windkrac ht (TWA110 en TWS 20-25), waarbij vooral Amhas en WJ heel hard konden varen met snelheden die wij nooit kunnen evenaren.
En dat bleek ook. De kleine voorsprong op WJ vloog weg en werd omgezet in een achterstand van nu ruim 50 mijl. We verwachten dat dit nog wat oploopt.
De grotere voorsprong op Amhas vervloog veel minder snel, zij lijken hun schip deze keer minder makkelijk op snelheid te kunnen brengen of houden. In elk geval is de afstand geslonken tot 38 mijl en het snelheids verschil bedroeg ongeveer 1 mijl per uur.
Nu de wind iets is gedraaid, kunnen wij ook harder en we verwachten dat het snelheids verschil in de komende 12 uren geminimaliseerd gaat worden. En dat betekent ook dat we genoeg over houden om voor ze te kunnen eindigen in deze leg.
De laatste 24 uur verwachten we met ons grootste voorzeil (de A2) te moeten varen, waarbij de wind verder ruimt naar een TWA van 140-150 en de wind afneemt naar 15-17 knopen. In deze situatie zijn wij normaal gesproken net zo snel, of zelf iets sneller. Dat geeft ons ook goede hoop dat we het wel gaan redden.
Het is belangrijk om op Amhas voor te blijven, want dat betekent dat we in de laatste etappe alleen maar vlak achter hen hoeven te finishen om de race te winnen. En dat is goed te doen in deze laatste etappe! Er zitten veel stretegische keuzes in met upwind varen, waar ons schip nu eenmaal goed in is!
Voorlopig dus alle vertrouwen dat we het gaan redden. De komende 12-16 uren gaan daar definitief uitsluitsel over geven.
Verder is alles goed aan boord, we controleren alles veelvuldig, want we pushen maximaal. De sfeer leidt er niet onder, we zijn rustig maar gespannen en gefocused.
De laatste 40 uren van deze etappe zijn inmiddels in gegaan.ETA in Grenada is overmorgenochtend (14de) om 10:00 uur UTC en we moeten nu nog 440 mijl.

Sadly for us WJ has found their turbo setting the last 2 days. WOW! Impressive speeds. So she mad a distance we will probably not able to cover before the end of this leg.
On the other hand we are happy to be in front of Amhas (still 32 miles as of now) and we expect this will be enough to reach Grenada ahead of them!
For us, that was our main objective, so we can take on the last leg with a little more ease.
The sea is quite rough here at the moment. We think it’s a combination between wave direction, swell and current making the waves pointy and very different in size. We have also seen some under water mountains, and that usually does net help either.
Furtermore, the squalls are heavy, no easy ones as Christian was expecting. Well, as weather always is just an expectation, not a prediction. You can never be sure!
The last days we also had little sun, lots of grey skies and clouds.
This morning, early, the clouds went largely away and the sun was there (and the half moon in the night).
That is much more pleasant!
We have just changed from our A3 to our A6, so we can sail more downwind, with more power. Later today, or in the evening, we will probably also switch to A2, but the wind is still around 20-24 knots. With sometimes a little breathing moment of 16-18 knots.
Our eta is now 18-20 hrs, so it will probably be dark as we arrive. But as is looks now, this will be the last report from this leg.
